Aim and Objective: The objective of this study was to explore the correlation between lip print patterns and various types of skeletal malocclusion.
Materials and Methods: A total of 132 individuals with confirmed skeletal malocclusions—Class I, Class II Division 1, Class II Division 2, and Class III—were selected based on ANB angle assessment using lateral cephalograms. Lip prints were obtained using the standard lipstick and cellophane tape technique. Each print was examined and classified according to the Tsuchihashi system, which includes Types I, I′, II, III, IV, and V.
Results: The partial vertical groove (PVG) pattern was the most frequently observed across all types of skeletal malocclusions. Among individuals with skeletal Class I, the branched lip pattern appeared most frequently. In cases of skeletal Class II Division 1 and Division 2, the partial vertical groove pattern was dominant. For individuals with skeletal Class III, the complete vertical groove pattern was more prevalent.
Conclusion: Lip print analysis has potential applications in personal identification, especially in forensic cases and mass disaster situations. Furthermore, identifying specific lip print patterns in relation to skeletal malocclusion assist in early diagnosis, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of preventive and interceptive orthodontic treatments.
